Abstract
This research investigates potential gap utilization at a minor street intersection entrance when connected and automated vehicles (CAV) on the mainline are mixed with ordinary vehicles. Traffic responsive control is commonly used today for this type of intersection through detection at the minor street entrance, which has often caused disruptions to the mainline traffic due to the need to serve the minor street vehicles on a first come, first serve basis. When a mainline CAV is approaching the intersection, it can receive data from the roadside unit (RSU) and be instructed to adjust its speed if conditions allow, thus creating an opportunity for the minor street vehicle to enter the intersection without the need to terminate the green light for the mainline traffic. Gap characteristics are studied to help the design and implementation of a responsive vehicle control scheme that utilizes CAV to create usable gaps among mainline vehicles when ordinary vehicles are waiting at the minor street to enter the intersection. Traffic flow analysis is conducted to assess the effectiveness of the application in different traffic scenarios. Simulation tests are performed to verify the control logic and help identify conditions of vehicle distribution for model parameter definition and determination.
