Abstract
Vehicles passing through the intersection can cause traffic conflicts and delays when changing lanes, which is a problem with Roundabouts. To address the shortcomings of conventional Roundabouts, a Turbo-Roundabouts proposed. The Turbo-Roundabouts designed with curvilinear entrance, spiral path roundabout, entrance/exit lanes and raised lane dividers in the roundabout to reduce the risk of traffic conflicts caused by entering the ring and changing lanes. Field data were investigated, simulated and analyzed using VISSIM software to verify the effectiveness of the method. The proposed design was evaluated based on three parameters: average delay, average number of stops and number of conflicts. The average delay was reduced by 38.8%, the average number of stops was reduced by 40.3% and the number of conflicts was reduced by 78% compared to the conventional roundabout design. The results show that the solution has better performance than the conventional roundabout design and can effectively reduce intersection conflicts and improve intersection capacity.
