The lightning channel wave impedance is scattered and the selection for lightning protection calculation is not unique. In order to study the influence of the lightning channel wave impedance on the lightning shielding failure intrusion wave overvoltage, based on traveling wave theory, the formation of lightning intruding wave is studied. Then, the equipment overvoltage at different electrical distances is analyzed when lightning channel wave impedance changes with examples. The results show that the lightning channel wave impedance's access makes the operating voltage propagates along the line, and the shielding failure wave is composed of the lightning surge component and the "operating voltage surge component". The "operating voltage impulse component" has the characteristic of chopped wave, and the severe case causes a surge with an amplitude of 2 times the operating voltage at the equipment, making it a threat to transformers and other winding equipment. For a typical 500kV line, when lightning channel wave impedance changes between 300Ω and 900Ω lightning striking the conductor, overvoltage has a more than 10% change. "Operating voltage impact component" cannot be ignored in substation lightning protection researches, and it is necessary to check with the statistical lightning channel wave impedance.
