Abstract
Purpose/Aim
The efficient performance of the grounding systems in distribution networks is a key factor for the adequate operation of the protective schemes, in an effort to ensure the restriction of the developed potentials and the protection of the personnel and the equipment. However, the rapid growth of grid-connected embedded generation, during the last decade, has changed the operational characteristics of the distribution networks, making necessary the re-design of the protection strategies. In this context, the role of the grounding systems has been to further investigated, taking into consideration the distributed generation.
Experimental/Modeling methods
In the current work, the performance of the grounding systems in distribution networks embedded with distribution generation will be studied, regarding various scenarios. The fault analysis of the network under study will be performed by using DIgSILENT Power Factory, since SES CDEGS will be used for the calculation of the developed potentials (touch and step voltages) for each short-circuit current, in order to evaluate the performance of the grounding grid. To this direction, different types of soils and protection devices characteristics will be examined.  
Results/discussion
According to the obtained results, the worst-case scenario in designing a grounding system on power distribution grids considering techno-economic criteria will be identified.
Conclusions
Appropriate guidelines will be extracted for the efficient design of grounding systems in distribution networks with embedded distributed generation.
