Abstract
The surface charge accumulation on spacers inside GIL distorts local surface electric field, and the change in local surface electric field may influence the flashover phenomena. In this paper, the effect of surface charge properties on the flashover arc path are studied using a 220 kV spacer subjected to operating overvoltage. The flashover arc path over the spacer under impulse voltage were directly observed. The results showed that the arc path is away from the surface when homopolar charge is deposited, while the arc path sticks to the spacer surface when the surface is predeposited with heteropolar charge.
