Abstract
Insulator pollution flashover of the transmission line seriously affects the safety of the power system. For the on-site insulators, the air pollution is mostly accumulated on the insulator when the climate is dry with less rainy, while the flashover often occurs when the climate turns humidity, which means that the traditional leakage-current-based early warning signal for the flashover can be issued only a few minutes before the flashover, and the monitoring of the insulator pollution degree during the contamination period cannot be achieved. To this end, the moisture absorption characteristics of the insulator contamination at non-100% relative humidity (70~99%) was analyzed in this paper and it was found that when the atmospheric humidity changes with 75%~99% relative humidity, due to the simultaneous effect of moisture absorption and evaporation, the water content in the contamination layer and leakage current change from a stable value to another with an exponential approach function. The test results are of great significance to the pollution accident warning as well as the digitization of the transmission line.
