Abstract
Icing on overhead transmission lines could became a serious threat to the safe and stable operation of power system. Ice disaster on power system could cause serious impacts to the society and the economic development, and therefore the China Southern Power Grid has been spending signifcant efforts on developing ice prevention and disaster reduceting techniqures. Icing monitor techniques have significant importance for grid companies to effetively and efficiently deal with potiential icing events. This paper proposes an ice detection method based on the capacitance effect of icing process. The feasibility of icing monitoring based on capacitance measurement on conductors has been experiently studied thorugh airtificail icing tests in a climate chamber. The relationship between the capacitance of the ice on the conductor and the ice thickness shows a power function relationship. The effect of the conductive of ice and the types of icing layer were experimently studied. The results shows that ice conductive, which indicating the impacts of the contimination levels of the envirment on the conductor and icing process, has a minor impact to the capacitance measurements. The type of icing, i.e. glaze or rime, have shown a major different on the capacitance during the icing process.
