Abstract
Compared with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), polypropylene (PP) has higher working temperature, better insulation performance and can be recycled, which is considered to be a substitution of XLPE insulation. This work focuses on the effect of cooling methods during crystallization on the AC electrical tree growth characteristics in iPP/POE blend insulation.
The breakdown strength of iPP/POE blend insulation and the electrical tree initial voltage elevates with the cooling rates increase from 2.5 to 10 ℃/min. The breakdown strength and electrical tree initial voltage of non-isothermal crystallization samples are higher than isothermal samples. The spherulite size declines and the interface density of spherulites increases which introduces more deep traps. It is concluded that cooling rate can reduce the spherulite size of PP and then improve the electrical performance of PP cable insulation.
