The application of organic manure is considered to be the main source of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil. Aerobic composting can convert organic waste into organic manure, and the high temperatures by composting can also degrade ARGs. However, the decrease of composting temperature leads to ARGs rebound and even enrichment during aging stage, which reduces the removal efficiency of ARGs. Persulfate and Nano zero-valent iron (n-ZVI), as new exogenous additives, have significant advantages in the removal of ARGs by anaerobic nitrification and water disinfection. The REDOX properties of Nano zero-valent iron (n-ZVI) and persulfate inactivate resistant bacteria and ARGs, implementing permanent removal of ARGs. Until now, the application of the two materials in aerobic composting and the removal effect of ARGs are unclear. Therefore, two functional materials, n-ZVI and persulfate, were added in the aerobic composting process, and the removal effect and mechanism of two oxidation-reducing agents on ARGs were investigated.
