In order to study the characteristics of the content of heavy metals in the soil around the open pit, the state of contamination, and the health risks to the surrounding population. Taking the Sheng-Li open pit mine as an example, 152 sample points were collected in this study area to determine Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Se, Ge and As as well as soil pH. The single factor index method, the Nemero index method, the ground accumulation index method, pollution load index and potential ecological risk index were used to evaluate the level of soil heavy metal contamination and the exposure risk evaluation model was used to assess the risk of heavy metals to human health. The results showed that the average soil Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Se, Ge and As contents in the study area exceeded the corresponding soil background values of Inner Mongolia Province. The heavy metal evaluation method shows that all the soil samples in the study area were contaminated. Cd, Se and Ge were more contaminated compared to other heavy metals. The total carcinogenic risk level of soil heavy metals in the study area is less than 1×10-4 for adults, which is within the acceptable range, and greater than 1×10-4 for children, which is a carcinogenic risk for children.
