Abstract
The Magnetorheological Fluid (MRF) Shock Absorber is a type of semi-active shock absorber that has been utilized for many years. By incorporating MRF within the shock absorber and applying a magnetic field to the piston, the damping force can be adjusted. However, due to the high cost of Carbonyl Iron Particles (CIP), the development of this type of semi-active shock absorber for commercial use has been limited. In this paper, a new semi-active shock absorber that uses Magnetorheological Elastomer (MRE) Sandwich is proposed. Unlike the MRF Shock Absorber, which requires a substantial amount of CIP as the filling fluid, this semi-active shock absorber uses MRE Sandwich, which demands a smaller amount of CIP, thus reducing the cost. The MRE Sandwich Shock Absorber in this study is composed of several parts, including an outer tube, oil, piston with orifice and coil, and MRE Sandwich, which serves as a damping force controller. The damping force can be adjusted by altering the electric current in the coil. With no current, the MRE Sandwich has low stiffness, allowing the orifice hole to open easily, resulting in a low damping force. When current is applied, the stiffness of the MRE Sandwich increases, making it more challenging to open the orifice hole, resulting in a higher damping force.
