Numerical investigation of Richtmyer-Meshkov instability in the reshock process based on discrete Boltzmann method

Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instability is a fundamental compressible hydrodynamic instability, which is caused by the shock wave impacting a wrinkled material interface between two fluids. The RM instability phenomena are ubiquitous in both nature (such as the supernova explosion) and engineering applications (including the inertial confinement fusion). In fact, there are complex fluid structures, shock fronts, and other waves that interplay with each other in the RM system, which usually involves classical non-linear, multi-scale and non-equilibrium behaviors. The complicated characteristics pose a great challenge to traditional simulation methods. As a mesoscopic kinetic method, the discrete Boltzmann method (DBM) is suitable to simulate the RM instability and has been applied to investigate the RM instability recently. In this talk, we present the application of the DBM to the RM instability in the reshock process, study the RM system with both hydrodynamic and thermodynamic non-equilibrium effects, and analyze relevant physical mechanisms from macroscopic and mesoscopic perspectives. This work can provide a deeper understanding of physical mechanisms of the RM instability in the reshock process based on the kinetic theory.
