Plasma jet is generated by laser ablation on a titanium film, and the interactions of the jet with neutral gases are studied with experimental and numerical simulation methods. Experimental studies showed that the plasma jet generated in air could sustained a longer time and streaming a further distance compared to that in vacuum. As air density increase, the jet was blocked and the plasma energy was diffused more isotropic. Simulation studies showed that the opacity and density of neutral gas played important roles in plasma jet evolution. The existence of the air helped to slow down the radiative cooling of the plasma jet, but the air also retard the jet by collision. These results have potential applications in the explanation of astrophysical phenomena.
