Diamond and novel materials synthesis by shock

From Earth to space, impact often means disaster, while impact crater is the rare treasure of science. Recently, the discovery of natural diamonds at the Xiuyan meteoritic crater suggests that diamonds could be produced by the subsolidus self-redox of ferromagnesian carbonate, accompanying by the formation of a new mineral (Maohokite) [1, 2]. To simulate the process, shock-metamorphic effects on two carbonates with ferrous irons are studied. Nanodiamonds are observed in both shocked carbonates, implying ferric irons formed in residues. This study not only enriches the formation mechanism of diamond, but also highlights the guidance significances of impact craters and shock wave in the artificial synthesis of high-pressure materials.
