The volume ignition has the characteristics of low convergence requirement and high gain in theory. However, engineering defects such as joints of two halves of outer shells have complex effects on implosion energy coupling efficiency, shell symmetry and hydrodynamic instability. In recent years, these problems have been studied by simulation, target fabrication and experiment in China. Using laser with there different cone fraction and 2D backlighting radiography, outer shell deformation, inner shell deformation after double shells collision and core deformation were observed. Special phenomena of double shell target such as core splitting and enlargement were found. 3.7×109 DD neutron yield and about 4% 1D YOC were obtained by double metal shells target with improved joints driven by high-temperature uranium-based Frustraum.
