Radiation transport through inhomogeneous mixtures
Abstract Accepted

Inhomogeneous mixtures consist of two or more randomly mixed immiscible materials[1,2], which is ubiquitous in turbulent mixtures, such as interstellar molecular clouds, terrestrial clouds, and fusion pellets. Over the past decades, the interest in studying the transport of radiation in inhomogeneous mixtures has been growing in a broad range of research fields such as astrophysics and plasma physics. As the composition of inhomogeneous mixtures is only known statistically at a specified position at any time, traditional deterministic and/or Monte-Carlo radiation transport approaches designated for a homogeneous medium may be inapplicable. For this reason, it is a challenge to model the radiation transport through inhomogeneous mixtures, not to mention the underlying mechanism.

In this talk, we shall investigate from a theoretical perspective the radiation transport through inhomogeneous mixtures in different physical scenarios[3,4]. For pure absorption of radiation, we developed a statistical model to calculate the ensemble-averaged transmission for a binary inhomogeneous mixture. Our results show that the effect of the mixing size is substantial when the mixtures’ correlation length is comparable to the mean free path of photons, which is absent in atomic mix model. For a realistic problem where the coupling of radiation to material must be considered, we used a random sampling of mixtures combined with a deterministic solution of the time-dependent radiation-material coupled equation. Calculated results can be well interpreted by a proposed steady-state stochastic transport model. Furthermore, we suggest that it is the relationship between lp (the mean free path of photons) and L (the width of the mixture) that determines the impact of inhomogeneous mixtures on the radiation transport, which is further corroborated by additional simulations. Combining the proposed simple relationship and 1D simulations, we have resolved the existing debatable issue of the impact of inhomogeneous mixture in previous multidimensional studies. Finally, we shall briefly discuss the influence of dimension on the stochastic radiation flux. Our systematic work is expected to improve the understanding of radiation transport through inhomogeneous mixtures in applications.
