What can we learn from experiments with high-brilliance γ-ray beams
Abstract Accepted

Photonuclear physics was reviewed recently and a number of open problems were pointed out which await to be resolved using high-brilliance γ-ray beams [1]. The talk will address some of these questions, which are related to precise measurements of total or partial cross sections of photonuclear reactions, correlation measurements in photo-fission at the threshold and in the region of the IVGDR, etc. The readiness for such measurements at ELI-NP will be discussed and the state-of-the-art instrumentation, which will be available for the users will be presented. The suggested day-one flagship experiments at the facility will be highlighted.

In addition, the possibility to utilize γ-beams with orbital angular momentum (OAM) in photonuclear experiments will be discussed. It will be demonstrated that this technique is a game-changer in the field and a few selected physics problems and classes of experiments, related to, e.g., changes of photonuclear cross sections in such reactions [2], as well as the possibility to address nuclear excitations with higher multipolarity will be discussed.

The opportunities for the production of beams of exotic nuclei at the Gamma Factory at CERN will be discussed, too [3].
