The dense particles ejected from the back surface of metals and its mixture with the various gas have been widely investigated around the world. But how the particles break-up and how the gas-particle couple under the strong convergent gas shock wave? These scientific problems become the issues in the field of impact implosion and multiphase fluid dynamics. To advance the solution of these problems, the first efforts should be the understanding of the characteristics of the convergent gas shock wave in the complicated configuration. The FP-1 [1] pulsed power facility at the Institute of Fluid Physics (IFP), CAEP is probably the suitable tool which was developed in 1996 for the magnetically-driven liner implosion experiments. With the typical aluminum liner load of 3cm in diameter and 0.5mm in thickness, FP-1 can output the maximum current of 2MA with the quarter cycle of 7μs in the case of charging voltage of 20kV, and the velocity of 1km/s was achieved when the liner imploded to half its initial diameter. With the aids of axial laser-schlieren high-speed photographs, the standard cylindrical gas shock wave has been observed firstly on the FP-1 facility. Fig.1 shows the convergence and rebound at axis of the gas shock wave. Comparisons between the experimental observations and the simulations from the 1-dimensional MHD code SOL1D [2] are displayed in Fig.2. As employed a target with cylindrical outer surface and square inner surface, the square convergent gas shock wave and the attached gas shock wave were observed simultaneously in Fig.3. These observations will contribute to the future investigations of gas-particle mixture and particle break-up under strong convergent gas shock wave.
