The Physical Origin of Shock Polarization

In shock wave physics, the phenomena of shock polarization have been investigated for near a century. To understand the shock polarization, several phenomenological models were proposed. However, these models failed to offer the physical origin of shock polarization and cannot give the physics of the parameters utilized in the related models. In the work, the shock polarization was investigated theoretically by employing Yuheng Zhang equation. It was found that the shock polarization is a non-equilibrium phenomenon and the shock-induced electromotive force in metals as well as the shock-induced polarization in dielectric materials is caused by the lift of electron chemical potential. The theory can successfully account for the complex relaxation behaviors of shock polarization in dielectric materials,  for instance, the measured electrical current proportional to the sample area but inversely proportional to the sample thickness, the sign reversal of the measured electrical current, and the magnitude of the current. In a word, Yuheng Zhang equation may correctly give the physical origin of the shock polarization and would find important applications in various fields.
