The energy loss of kinetic ions in plasma is very important for the development of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) [1], ion-driven fast ignition [2], and high-energy-density physics (HEDP) investigation [3]. The related studies in low energy region are concerned due to its significance. The research for effective charge, as an important parameter of energy loss, is very necessary. In the present work, the experiment was performed at the 320 kV high voltage experimental platform at Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMP, CAS) in Lanzhou. The energy losses of H+ and He2+ ions with low energy penetrating through a hydrogen gas discharging plasma were measured by a position sensitive detector with time resolution, and energy-loss data with high precision were obtained. Moreover, the effective charge of ions in plasma is calculated by the traditional model, and the comparison between theoretical calculations and experimental data shows that, the traditional effective charge model can not effectively describe experimental results. Therefore, the effective charge model for protons is modified, and the defined formula of effective charge is discussed for H+ and He2+ ions in gas and plasma.
