Kinetic simulation of sideband instability and its effects on hot electron generation by stimulated Raman side-scattering

The sideband instability of electron plasma waves, associated with stimulated Raman side scattering (SRSS) in the convective regime [1], has been investigated using kinetic simulations. Before the sideband instability occurs, electron trapping is seen to first result in kinetic inflation of the convective SRSS. Kinetic inflation might be one of reasons that stimulated SRSS mainly occurs in the convective regime instead of in the absolute regime in experiments. The sideband instability is shown to be responsible for the saturation of the inflationary SRSS. The characteristic wavenumber spectrum associated with the sideband instability is shown to correlate with the energy content of hot electrons and offers a possible approach to estimate the fraction of hot electron produced by SRSS.
