Arc fault has become an increasingly prominent issue affecting the safe operation of power distribution network. Research on arc fault detection can reduce electrical fire accidents caused by fault arcs, which is of great significance for ensuring the safe and reliable operation of power distribution network. In this paper, an arc fault detection method based on instantaneous reactive current is proposed for three-phase AC series arc faults. Firstly, the three-phase AC low-voltage distribution network system combined with the Cassie arc model is described. Then, according to the instantaneous reactive power theory, the three-phase current is transformed into the instantaneous reactive current through coordinate transformation, and the occurrence of arc faults is determined by recognizing the change of the instantaneous reactive current. Finally, the simulation results verify that the arc fault can be detected by the proposed method quickly and accurately.
