Abstract
As the ninth most abundant element in earth crust, titanium (Ti) occurs in oceanic waters at extremely low concentrations (6−250 pM). Oceanic distribution of dissolved Ti can be used as a tracer for atmospheric dust deposition, and help understand mechanisms controlling oceanic distributions of dissolved aluminum and iron because these three elements are supplied to the ocean via dust deposition and are subject to removal via particle scavenging. Because of difficulties in sampling and analysis, there has been rare data published for dissolved Ti in the open Ocean.
We have applied a newly developed isotope dilution Mg(OH)2 coprecipitation high resolution multiple collection ICPMS method to determine dissolved Ti in seawater samples collected during US GEOTRACES North Atlantic GA03 cruises in 2010 and 2011. The distribution of dissolved Ti in the North Atlantic Ocean is presented and discussed.
