Abstract
In inertial confinement fusion (ICF), stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) can cause laser energy loss and target preheating. In the past few decades, how to suppress the development of SRS has attracted widespread attention. It is worth noting that increasing the laser bandwidth can reduce the growth rate of SRS, but nonlinear effects such as frequency shift of plasma waves may lead to SRS suppression failure. In this report, a novel broadband light is proposed to suppress SRS, which extends the bandwidth by introducing a random term in the phase. This kind of broadband laser is called a stochastic phase low-coherence laser (SPLL). Detailed particle-in-cell simulations are carried out to study the nonlinear evolution of SRS driven by the SPLL. It is shown that the SPLL can suppress the development of EPWs, backscattering of the laser and the generation of hot electrons effectively. Compared with traditional broadband lasers composed of multiple monochromatic lasers, the advantage of SPLL lies in its ability to effectively suppress SRS in the nonlinear stage.
