To obtain precision data (in one experiment the error was £ 1%) on the shock compressibility of substances, the devices with a big mass of an impactor and of a target are required. As a rule, such studies are carried out on light-gas guns. One of the best guns, a two-stage light-gas gun in the Livermore Laboratory (USA), accelerates the impactors of 20 g mass up to a velocity of 8 km/s.
Disk explosive magnetic generators (DEMGs) can be an alternative to light-gas guns.
The paper describes the results of a series of experiments studying the shock compressibility of substances using small-class DEMGs [1]. There have been demonstrated:
- high quality of realized aluminum impact liners at velocities of 7-8 km/s;
- a possibility of obtaining a point on the Hugoniot with an error of less than 1% both in compression and pressure.
In terms of possibilities of precision studies of shock compressibility of substances, the small-class DEMGs are as good as the best samples of light-gas guns, and in terms of possibilities of identical loading of up to ~ 10 samples in one experiment, they are probably superior. The latter, in particular, makes it possible to experimentally confirm the accuracy of the estimated measurement errors from the measurement data for a number of reference materials.
