Abstract
Due to the high specific strength and stiffness, the light-weight sandwich plates are widely employed as protective armors to resist the impact loadings. In this paper, the deformation behaviors of two typical sandwich plates: the aluminum foam sandwich plate and the aluminum honeycomb sandwich plate, are experimentally investigated under the explosive loading. Results show that , for the honeycomb sandwich panel with low core strength, the core is completely compacted, and the panel and backplane have large out-of-plane deformation. For the aluminum foam sandwich panel with high core strength, the core is partially compressed. In addition to the large out-of-plane deformation of the panel and the backplane, the backplane has obvious fracture damage. In the design of sandwich structure, it is necessary to make a reasonable combination of each panel / core / back plate to ensure that the damage of sandwich structure meets the requirements.
