Abstract
Complex materials (e.g., foams), characterized by nano- to microscale ramdom inner structures and high energy absorption rates, offer new avenues in high-energy-density physics.

In this talk, we report our recent progress in understanding the interaction between intense lasers / high-current electron beams and complex materials.  Our research encompasses both analytical and numerical studies focusing on the generation of high-energy-density states[1], direct laser acceleration employing underdense foams, and the branched flow phenomenon[2]-[4]. Some preliminary experimental results will also be presented.
