New coherent light source and brilliant gamma-rays driven by a high-current relativistic electron beam

Abstract
Now many kinds of short-wavelength radiations, ranging from ultraviolet light to gamma-rays, can be produced in the laboratory. These radiations have broad applications in many areas including chemistry,physics,biology, industry, security and so on. However, generating short-wavelength radiation source usually requires the construction of large and expensive particle accelerators, such as Synchrotrons and X-ray FELs. The laser has brought us an extremely compact approach to generate short-wavelength radiation. Based on laser plasma interaction, coherent XUV/X-ray source can be generated through HHG, or through compact free-electron laser. For gamma-rays with much higher photon energy, it is usually incoherent and can be generated through betatron radiation in the plasma channel or inverse Compton scattering process.
In this talk, I will introduce our recent research progress on these topics, and some interesting new results are obtained. Recently, our group is mainly focused on the transport and control of laser-driven relativistic electron beam (REB). Based on this, we have further extended the applications of REB in generating coherent radiation source and high-brilliance incoherent gamma-rays. In particular, we propose a new approach for producing coherent intense subcycle pulse by simply directing a REB into a plasma with a density up-ramp. In addition, we propose a new scheme of three-dimensional nanoscale bunching of REB in a beam-driven plasma wakefield. Super-channeling of high-current REB in stochastic porous structures is also discovered and this phenomenon can lead to extremely high conversion efficiency gamma-rays. These results should be of much interest to researchers in many areas.
