Abstract
Objective
The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of CAMS intervention for Chinese suicidal college students.
Methods
17 participants were recruited from an university. Baseline measurements were administered to participants after they agreed to join in the study and we measured suicidal ideation, distress, hopelessness and depression level of participants. The participants were randomized to different group using minimization. The two groups used CAMS and treatment as usual (TAU) respectively. The intervention was completed when the risk release criteria are met respectively. Then, post measurement was conducted to compare the changes in each variable after intervention and the moderation effect was also tested.
Results & Discussion
We use SPSS 25.0 to conduct the statistical analysis and the results are as follows:
1. Suicidal ideation was significantly reduced in both groups, but the difference between the groups was not significant.
2.The reduction of distress, hopelessness and depression in both CAMS and TAU were not significant, however, the value of distress, hopelessness and depression  decreased in both groups after intervention. The difference between the groups was also not significant.
3. We also explored the moderator of the intervention effectiveness, previous suicide attempts has a significant moderating effect on the intervention effect of hopelessness, and medication use has a borderline significant moderating effect on suicidal ideation. There is no significant moderating effects were found on other variables, but a tendency for some moderating effect was found by bar graphs.
Conclusions
We examined the of CAMS for Chinese suicidal college students to improve the current state of suicide intervention. The results showed that CAMS can significantly reduce the suicidal ideation, also a positive effectiveness was found in reducing distress, hopelessness and depression, which providing preliminary support for the effectiveness of CAMS. However, the difference between the two groups was not significant and it should be tested in a larger sample in the further study.
