Objective
The study aims to explore the relationship between self-cohesion and suicidal ideation ,and to reveal its underlying mechanisms. By understanding how self-cohesion affects suicide risk, the study aims to provide a theoretical basis and intervention strategies for suicide prevention.
Methods
This study employed a cross-sectional design, with 1409 college students surveyed using the Personality Structure Questionnaire (PSQ),the Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire(INQ),and the Brief Suicide Behavior Screening Questionnaire(BSBSQ).
Results & Discussion
Self-cohesion was significantly positively correlated with self-esteem(r=0.647,p<0.01),and significantly negatively correlated with perceived burdensomeness ,thwarted belongingness, and suicidal ideation(r=-0.567,p<0.01;r=-0.582,p<0.01;r=-0.379,p<0.01).Self-esteem was significantly negatively correlated with perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, and suicidal ideation(r=-0.660,p<0.01;r=-0.708,p<0.01;r=-0.442,p<0.01).Perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness were significantly positively correlated with suicidal ideation(r=0.435,p<0.01;r=0.432,p<0.01).Self-esteem, thwarted belongingness, and perceived burdensomeness mediated the effect of self-cohesion on suicidal ideation.
Conclusions
Self-cohesion can negatively predict suicidal ideation ,and self-esteem, perceived burdensomeness, and thwarted belongingness mediate the relationship between self-cohesion and suicidal ideation. These findings offer new perspectives for suicide prevention and intervention, emphasizing the importance of enhancing individual self-cohesion.
