Abstract
Objective
Adolescent suicide is an important public health concern globally. Suicidal thoughts and behaviors are relatively rare during childhood but increase significantly during the transition to adolescence. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between emotional maltreatment and suicidal ideation among adolescents, as well as the mediating role of psychological distress and the moderating role of self-compassion.
Methods
A total of 4183 adolescents were surveyed by using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), the Psychache Scale (PAS), the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and the Brief Suicide Behavior Screening Questionnaire (BSBSQ).
Results & Discussion
Emotional maltreatment has an impact on suicidal ideation through the mediating role of psychological distress and the moderating role of self-compassion.

Results & Discussion
(1) Emotional maltreatment was significantly positively correlated with both psychological distress (r = 0.431, p < 0.001) and suicidal ideation (r = 0.392, p < 0.001), and significantly negatively correlated with self-compassion (r = -0.388, p < 0.001). (2) Psychological distress partially mediated the relationship between emotional maltreatment and suicidal ideation, accounting for 57.46% of the total effect. (3) Self-compassion negatively moderated the relationship between emotional maltreatment and suicidal ideation (β = -0.045, p < 0.05) , the relationship between emotional maltreatment and psychological distress (β = -0.081, p < 0.001) , and the relationship between psychological distress and suicidal ideation (β = -0.083, p < 0.001) .
ConclusionsEmotional maltreatment has an impact on suicidal ideation through the mediating role of psychological distress and the moderating role of self-compassion.
