Abstract
Transformer oil plays a vital role in oil-immersed transformers, with its condition and performance directly impacting the operational efficiency and service life of the transformer. This paper proposes a metamaterial-based sensor for detecting water content in transformer oil. By measuring the resonance frequency difference at varying water concentrations, the sensor enables detection at low moisture levels. The sensor comprises a microstrip transmission line and a metamaterial resonator unit. Simulation of different resonator structures determined that a four-arm resonator configuration yields optimal sensor performance. Physical testing of the designed sensor using a network analyzer revealed that as water content increased from 0 ppm to 300 ppm, the sensor's resonant frequency decreased from 5.876 GHz to 5.8 GHz, exhibiting a linear relationship. The sensor designed in this paper is capable of detecting the moisture content of transformer oil with an accuracy of 50 ppm. This verifies the feasibility of using this sensor for the detection of transformer oil moisture content, providing a new solution for the condition monitoring of transformer oil.
