Landslide-structure interaction (LSI) of reservoir landslides: insights from physical and numerical modelling

Abstract
For large-scale landslides, a single row of discrete stabilizing piles often fails to provide sufficient reinforcement. To overcome this limitation, discrete multi-row stabilizing pile (MRSP) groups have been proposed as an effective solution. However, the complex landslide-structure interaction (LSI) within discrete MRSP-reinforced landslides remain inadequately understood. This study investigates the complex LSI using coupled FDM-DEM numerical modeling.
The results demonstrate that the stabilizing mechanism of discrete MRSPs is governed by a triangular force chain formed by the bearing force at the pile front and side friction, which collectively resist landslide sliding forces. Additionally, interlocking actions in the soil in front of the piles further enhance resistance and limit pile deformation. The composite deformation damage mode of discrete MRSPs is characterized by shear deformation in front-row piles at the sliding zone and bending deformation in rear-row piles, due to differences in stress distribution and positional effects. The driving force transfer coefficient decreases from the first to the last row of piles, with pile spacing and row spacing exerting significant influence on force transfer efficiency.
