Abstract
Proton-boron (p-¹¹B) fusion offers a promising aneutronic energy source but is challenged by its relatively low cross-section. We performed an experimental study covering the 50–240keV proton energy range. Beams were incident on three target types (boron, hydrogen-boron, and carbon-hydrogen-boron) to measure alpha particles and characteristic gamma spectral lines. Our data show that hydrogen-boron targets yield higher alpha production than pure boron targets at identical energies, and the α₀/α₁ channel ratio increases rapidly around 170keV. Crucially, when a high-current beam was applied to the carbon-hydrogen-boron target, we observed a significant deviation from conventional beam-target scaling: the normalized alpha yield increased by approximately a factor of two compared to low-current runs. Spectroscopic diagnostics confirmed that the intense beam had transformed the target surface into a localized plasma. This enhancement is attributed to beam-induced plasma formation, which fundamentally alters the interaction regime and boosts reaction probability. These results demonstrate that plasma-mediated effects can substantially increase fusion yields, offering a novel pathway to optimize aneutronic fusion.
