Spectral parameterization of gravity wave effects in chemistry-climate models

The dissipation of internal gravity waves has an important influence on the thermal and dynamic regimes of the atmosphere. Global atmospheric circulation models have frequently a rather large spatial grid step and cannot directly simulate mesoscale waves. Therefore, different parameterizations are applied to approximate the heat inflows and accelerations produced by mesoscale gravity waves in the atmospheres. A spectral parametrization of mesoscale gravity waves was created for the use in chemistry-climate models. The parameterization uses theoretical relations for calculating vertical profiles of wave amplitudes, momentum fluxes, wave accelerations, and heat inflows. The parameterization involves waves coming through the lower boundary of the model as well as secondary wave modes generated by hydrodynamic sources inside the atmosphere. Simulations of the atmospheric general circulation have been made using the chemical-climate model. Comparisons show that the use of the spectral parameterization gives better agreement between simulated and reanalysis values for the atmospheric temperature and zonal wind. The spectral parameterization of gravity waves lets adaptable tuning and can be used in other atmospheric circulation models.
