Abstract
The Experiment on Typhoon Intensity Change in Coastal Area (EXOTICCA), initiated under the UN ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee framework, is a premier scientific initiative aimed at advancing the understanding and prediction of tropical cyclone (TC) intensity and structural evolution prior to and during landfall. Over the past decade, EXOTICCA has made significant strides in transitioning from traditional observation methods to a highly integrated, multi-platform coordinated observation system. Recent progress highlights the successful deployment and standardization of cutting-edge technologies, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), rocket-deployed dropsondes, and advanced lidars, forming a robust land-sea-air-space monitoring network.Notably, the latest campaigns, including the 2025 phase launched in the South China Sea, mark a new era of integrating these multi-source observational datasets with artificial intelligence algorithms and high-resolution numerical weather prediction models. These advancements have yielded unprecedented, high-spatiotemporal-resolution data concerning TC inner-core dynamics, air-sea interactions, and boundary layer structures. Consequently, EXOTICCA has significantly improved the forecasting accuracy for rapid intensity changes and TC-induced heavy rainfall, facilitating a vital shift from track-centric prediction to comprehensive impact-based forecasting. By fostering deep regional collaboration across the Asia-Pacific, EXOTICCA continues to strengthen early warning capabilities and mitigate meteorological disaster risks for vulnerable coastal populations.
