Abstract
Accurate radio propagation modeling is essential for characterizing wireless signal behavior in realistic environments, while field measurements can be time-consuming and resource-intensive. This study evaluates the capability of Sionna RT, a GPU-accelerated ray-tracing platform, to model outdoor Wi-Fi propagation by comparing simulated and real-world measured received signal strength at 2.4 GHz. A 3D model of the study area was reconstructed from OpenStreetMap data and further refined in Blender to represent the actual environment. The evaluation was conducted using two receiver antenna configurations: a commercial dipole antenna and a compact triple-ring antenna whose radiation pattern was incorporated into Sionna RT using a custom antenna pattern. Measurements were performed at multiple locations along a 10–100 m line-of-sight propagation path, and the simulation results were evaluated using Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Pearson correlation coefficient. The raw simulation results exhibited significant absolute power-level discrepancies but showed strong agreement in signal variation with distance, with Pearson correlation coefficients of 0.97 and 0.95 for the dipole and the triple-ring antennas, respectively. After applying an offset calibration, the MAE/RMSE were reduced to 2.78/3.31 dB for the dipole antenna and 2.89/3.32 dB for the triple-ring antenna. These results demonstrate that Sionna RT can reasonably reproduce the spatial variation of received signal strength under the investigated conditions and can serve as a complementary tool for outdoor radio propagation evaluation.
