Abstract
This review synthesizes reported rate-of-penetration (ROP) technologies for ultra-deep Paleozoic drilling in the Tarim Shunbei Oil and Gas Field and then proposes, but does not validate, a vibration-diagnostic framework for drilling equipment. The reviewed evidence covers four Permian configurations, one Carboniferous-Silurian configuration, and one Ordovician Sangtamu configuration using hybrid or shaped-cutter PDC bits, positive-displacement motors, torsional impactors, and automatic vertical drilling tools. The source field reports describe ROP increases of 19%–135% in selected applications and a maximum reported increase of 245% in footage per bit. These outcomes were obtained in different wells and operating conditions; they are observational comparisons, not controlled trials, because synchronized WOB, rotary speed, hydraulic, lithologic, and vibration records were not consistently available. The original contribution of this paper is a conceptual mapping from vibration features to equipment states and control actions, together with a concrete multi-well validation protocol. The proposed system synchronizes near-bit acceleration and angular rate with surface drilling channels and evaluates rule-based and data-driven baselines using well- and formation-separated tests. No trained classifier, synchronized downhole vibration dataset, or diagnostic-accuracy result is claimed. The framework therefore provides a testable engineering route rather than a validated intelligent diagnostic method.
