Abstract
Surface dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD) actuators generate near-wall ionic wind through electrohydrodynamic momentum transfer for flow and particle control in confined gas channels [1]. Gas composition affects SDBD behavior [2], but its influence on confined flow remains unclear. This study examines the effects of gas composition, excitation waveform, and discharge nonuniformity on SDBD-induced flow. Under 2 kHz sinusoidal excitation at 30 SLPM, nitrogen showed stronger discharge and longer streamer propagation, whereas air produced greater near-electrode acceleration. Downstream, nitrogen retained momentum more effectively, with integrated near-wall flow rate crossing over at approximately 30 mm [3]. In Fig. 1, sinusoidal excitation kept the flow closer to the dielectric surface, whereas negative-dominant asymmetric bipolar pulsed excitation produced a broader wall-normal distribution at comparable discharge powers. XZ-plane measurements revealed localized particle-depleted and high-velocity regions together with spanwise-nonuniform discharge. These results indicate that SDBD-induced flow depends on both deposited electrical energy and discharge spatial structure, affecting three-dimensional flow development and plasma-based flow and particle-transport applications.
