Publish/subscribe is a messaging pattern where senders of messages, called publishers or pubs for short, do not directly send messages to specific receivers, called subscribers or subs for short. Instead, published messages are firstly sent to messages proxy servers, called brokers or hubs. Messages are characterized into classes. Subscribers express interests in one or more classes and only receive messages that are of interest. In this paper, we have done a lot of research on how to improve the performance of message delivery and we find that the choice of pull/push message pattern and the consuming rate are two key factors. The server side’s load balancing strategy is also a very import aspect because it balances the messages to be delivered. Current message-oriented middleware, publish/subscribe or message queue, seldom concern about both two aspects. We integrate push message pattern and consumers cluster together with reliability assurance and meanwhile we offer a more fine-grained load balancing strategy based on message amounts. Finally we made an implementation over a mature publish/subscribe system: Hedwig. Experiment has been made on Planetlab, and the results show that it has better performance over messages delivery compared to the native publish/subscribe system.
