In wireless sensor networks, as an effective way to control the WSN topology, the clustering algorithm has numerous advantages in terms of energy consumption and network scalability. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient distributed clustering routing protocol (EEDCR) for long-lived ad hoc sensor networks. Given the disadvantages of LEACH, our proposed approach aims at optimizing the distribution of cluster heads and reducing control overhead during the process of cluster head selection for purpose of saving energy consumption in clustered WSN. Besides, after receiving the information from the member nodes, each cluster head (CH) aggregates the data and forwards it to the base station by multiple-hop communication based on improved Dijkstra’s algorithm. The effectiveness in prolonging the network lifetime and supporting scalable data aggregation of the new protocol is presented by some simulations.
