High-speed networks with long distance present a unique environment where TCP may have a problem in utilizing the full bandwidth. Queueing delay is the time that a packet spends in the queues of the routers waiting to be transmitted. It can be used to infer the congestion state of the network links. This paper proposes a delay-based algorithm, Bprobe, which dynamically probes and estimates bufmax, the maximum size of available buffers along the network path, and uses bufmax as a key parameter for window adjustment. By comparing bufmax and the current size of the buffers being occupied, Bprobe infers the size of the unused buffers and sets the window increment accordingly. The experiment results illustrate that the new algorithm can accelerate window recovery from packet losses and achieves about 20% more of throughput in high-speed long-distance networks than the default TCP algorithm in current Linux.
