Signcryption is a cryptographic primitive that fulfills both the functions of digital signature and public key encryption in a logical single step. It has a lower computational cost than traditional sign-then-encrypt approach. It enables a communication system to simultaneously achieve confidentiality, integrity, authentication and nonrepudiation. The major applications of signcryption include secure and authentic e-mail, E-commerce, M-commerce etc. The computer and communications systems which form a globally interconnected infrastructure are extremely inhomogeneous. That is, some systems may rely on PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) and others may rely on IBC (Identity-Based Cryptosystem) to provide secure communication to the users. To ensure a secure communication between the systems employing PKI and IBC, a cryptographic scheme that provides heterogeneous communication is necessary. This can be achieved with the help of heterogenous signcryption.
The existing single-receiver heterogenous signcryption scheme is based on pairing based cryptography. However, it has more computational as well as simulation overhead as compared to other cryptographic techniques. The proposed heterogenous signcryption scheme based on elliptic curve based cryptography overcomes this drawback as the elliptic curve computations requires very less computational time and communication overhead compared to pairing. Also it would be beneficial for heterogenous network users when the proposed system is extended to multiple recipients as the same can be achieved at a lower computational cost. This makes it easy for an IBC user to send a message to multiple PKI users and a PKI user to send a message to multiple IBC users.
