One of the most important concerns in Tehran municipal landfill is the production of leachate and its potential for water resources pollution, this study was undertaken to examine feasibility of biological and physico/chemical treating of high-strength landfill leachate that was collected from Tehran municipal landfill. The reactor with a working volume of 175 L, having membrane module (Hollow fiber) with pore size of 0.1 μm was used in this study. The dissolved oxygen concentration (DO) was maintained at 3.2 and 2.3 mg/L by adjusting the air flow to 4 m3/h and 2 m3/h respectively. The concentration of the mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) were 6300, 16474 and 5300 mg/L, at high aeration ratio (4 m3/h), high aeration ratio (4 m3/h) with PAC and low aeration ratio (2 m3/h) with PAC, respectively. The averages MBR-PAC effluent COD in high and low aeration were1407and 2361 mg/L with average removal efficiency of 97.15% and 95.21%, respectively,MBR integrated with PAC was successfully applied for the treatment of landfill leachate with average COD, BOD, NH4-N, PO4-P, SO4 and Turbidity removal efficiency of 97.15, 99.02, 97.63, 97.82, 43.64 and 81.89%. Results demonstrated that the PAC dosed (500 mg/L) can effectively improve the removal of COD, PO4, SO4 and turbidity. Importantly, the accumulation of microbial flocs (MLSS) in MBR was observed after PAC was added, which was mainly due to the improvement of attach growth of microorganisms and adsorption of some inhibitors as same as high COD and SO4 on the surface of PAC.
