Abstract- In this study, Montmorillonite (nanoclay) modified by dibutyl-disulfide (DD). The structure and morphology of the synthesized nanocomposite were characterized by powder the FT-IR, XRD and SEM. Then DD-MMT used for removal of Hg(II) from water samples. The effects of various parameters viz. adsorbent dose, agitation rate, contact time and initial solution pH were investigated for the removal of Hg(II).
Keyword- Mercury (II), Modify, Montmorillonite.
Introduction- Mercury may hurt to almost every organ and body system. Long-term exposure to mercury compounds from different sources (e.g. water, food, soil, and air) can lead to toxic effects on skin and cardiovascular, pulmonary, urinary, gastrointestinal, and neurological systems. Mercury can seep into underground water supplies from industrial and hazardous waste sites. Therefore, many investigations were done for the removal of mercury from water and wastewater.
Result, discussion and conclusion- The SEM images clearly showed that after the chemical treatment, a lot of pores were produced and the FT-IR spectra showed that a chemical modification was successfully occurred. The DD-MMT had very high uptake capacity and could remove mercury (100 mg/L) more than 95% with only 2g/L of adsorbent, in 10 min. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were employed for the study of the adsorption of mercury onto DD-MMT. The maximum adsorption capacity is bigger than most the reported methods. Adsorption kinetics of Hg(II) onto the composite followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. In order to test the reliability of the proposed removal methodology, it was applied to the removal of concentrations of Hg(II) from tap water, river water and industrial wastewater samples.
