The biogeochemistry of phosphorus plays a fundamental role in the soil ecosystem and aquatic environments. Its transformation processes in the soils are controlled by its’ physical-chemical parameters, especially the Fe species in the soils. However, there still exists controversy about the relationship of phosphorus transformation with Fe species in the soils. To interpret the relationship of phosphorus transformation processes with Fe species, 29 soil samples in subtropical areas from Xianning City, Hubei Province, China were collected for the aim with the aid of Correlation analysis. The results showed that although the contents of total phosphorus were high in the soil samples, the percentage of available phosphorus were rather low, in the range of 1.36%-6.61%. Most of the phosphorus existed in the forms of low bioavailability of residul-P and NaOH-P. Total Fe had strong positive correlation with total phosphorus, correlation coefficient 0.674. Available phosphorus percentage showed negative correlations with total iron and crystalline iron oxides while it had positive correlation with amorphous iron oxides. These findings highlighted the importance of iron species on the transformation of phosphorus and would be helpful in better understanding the transformation of phosphorus and improving the availability of phosphorus.
