Abstract: The ability of water hyacinth to remove and translocate cadmium(Cd), copper(Cu), lead(Pb) ions and the mixture of the three was investigated in this study. The removal percentages of metals by water hyacinth were in the order of Cu(II)>Cd(II)>Pb(II) in the mono-metal solution and Cu(II)>Pb(II)>Cd(II) in the multi-metal solution, during the same time period. And the removal percentages of all three elements in multi-metal solution were lower than that in mono-metal solution while the abilities of translocation showed opposite trends. Heavy metals were mostly stored in the root of plants and translocated to the shoot as time goes on. This result demonstrated that multi-metal uptaking behaviors differed from mono-metal uptake due to competition. Especially, during multi-metal uptake, Cd(II) was less competitive than Cu(II) and Pb(II). The nutrients response in both mono and multi-metal solution indicated multi-metal condition caused more physiological damage and induced nutrients(TN, TP,AN, NO3-N and PO4 3-) release of water hyacinth compared with being placed in mono-metal condition. And nitrogen release was considerably higher than phosphorus release.
