Digital imaging provides superior resolution and quality which is most important in application like Internet,Satellite communication, fax transmission, High Definition Television (HDTV), and digital storage etc. Medical imaging now a day has begun to enhance their area of application rapidly. Advance in telecommunication and information technology and emergence of electronic management system are other reason that resonating image problem. Thus compression technique is essential in archival and communication of medical images. Medical imaging requires storing, manipulating and communicating huge amount of digital data. Compression helps in reducing the storage requirements, network traffic, and therefore improves efficiency. This comparative study focused on the need of medical imaging, different approaches to image compression, emerging wavelet based lossy-lossless compression techniques, and how the recent technique works. This article also focused on how to increase the compression ratio and at the same time maintaining the PSNR level compared to the existing techniques, features of standard compression techniques such as embeddedness and progressive transmission, how these are useful and much needed in the interactive Teleradiology, telemedicine and Tele browsing application.
