Radio-frequency identification(RFID) has emerged as a new area of wireless communication which eases the ability to identify people, animals and objects with the use of tags carried or embedded by them. These tags contain information that can be read by a data capturing device to be processed in order to achieve desired results. RFID has been extensively used in tracking easily misplaced items, farm animals, waste management systems, research subjects and the like, thus generating a wealth of valuable data which can be applied to a variety of systems to enhance our future lives. We are creating a RFID based student tracking and attendance system which will ease some of student's problems and eliminate the time used in marking attendance. The idea is to install a classroom with multiple decently-long ranged RFID readers. Also, the students will be given an active tag embedded in an ID card. When a student is present in the room, the tag will be activated by the readers present in the room and will transmit back data stored in it. From the data received and signal strength and other attributes sensed by the readers, the presence of the student and his/her location in the room can be computed. As a result, attendance can be monitored without requiring the student to walk up to an attendance marking area.
