A new intelligent controlled reactor (ICR) was proposed. The reactance of ICR can be changed by a moveable magnetic-wedge, and be a large reactance when fault and lower in normal. The electromagnetic model was founded and the magnetic circuit was analyzed, then the design formula of ICR’s reactance was deduced. The structure of ICR was primary designed and modeled by using ANSYS. The equivalent reactance values were simulated when the magnetic-wedge was in different displacements. The result showed that the ICR’s reactance achieved the maximum value when the magnetic-wedge was plug-in completely, and the ICR’s reactance was reduced quickly when the magnetic-wedge was pull-out. The ICR can work with a fast actuator to constitute a fault current limiter that can limit fault current by adjusting magnetic circuit without current converting.
